Barnaby's Breakfast Blitz
Barnaby Butterfield considered himself a man of many talents, none of which, unfortunately, involved spatial awareness or gravity. His date, Penelope, a woman whose apartment was so pristine it looked like a museum exhibit for dust mites, was still asleep. Barnaby, emboldened by love (or perhaps just extreme overconfidence), decided to make breakfast. A noble, if perilous, endeavor.
He started with toast. The toaster, a sleek chrome beast, seemed to taunt him. He fumbled with the bread, dropping one slice directly into the fruit bowl, where it landed with a soft plop amongst the grapes. Retrieving it, he managed to knock the entire fruit bowl onto the floor, sending oranges and apples rolling like runaway bowling balls across Penelope’s immaculate hardwood.
Next, coffee. He carefully spooned grounds into the machine, but in his zeal, he missed the filter entirely, creating a fragrant, albeit messy, mound on the counter. While wiping it, his elbow connected with a delicate porcelain cup, sending it crashing into the sink. "Just character," he muttered, surveying the shards.
The grand finale: eggs. He cracked one with surprising finesse, then, emboldened, attempted a flourish with the second. It missed the pan entirely, splattering yolk across the pristine white cabinets. The third egg, perhaps sensing its imminent doom, slipped from his grasp and rolled under the refrigerator, a silent, eggy protest.
Penelope, awoken by the symphony of destruction, emerged, rubbing her eyes. She surveyed the scene: fruit carnage, coffee grounds like volcanic ash, ceramic shrapnel, and an egg yolk mural. Barnaby stood amidst it all, spatula in hand, looking like a culinary war veteran.
"Breakfast is... served?" he offered, holding up the solitary, slightly burnt piece of toast he'd managed to salvage.
Penelope blinked, then, to Barnaby’s utter astonishment, started to laugh. A full, joyous, uninhibited laugh. "Barnaby," she said, wiping a tear from her eye, "you're magnificent. Just... perhaps next time we order in?"
