Slobber & Snapshots: The Great Christmas Card Caper
"Just *one* nice family photo," declared Brenda, brandishing the camera like a weapon. "For the Christmas card! We look like we actually *like* each other, for once."
Her husband, Gary, adjusted his tie, which felt suspiciously like a dog's chew toy now. "Darling, I believe the last family photo was taken at Leo's third birthday, and he's fifteen now. I'm not sure 'liking' each other is the goal so much as 'surviving.'"
Fifteen-year-old Leo, currently perfecting his impression of a particularly sullen gargoyle, grunted. "Can't we just use a stock photo of a smiling, well-adjusted family? It'd be more accurate."
Six-year-old Chloe, meanwhile, was attempting to convince their Golden Retriever, Buster, that if he just concentrated hard enough, the squeaky toy banana in his mouth *would* turn into a real banana. Buster, ever the optimist, wagged his tail enthusiastically, drooling.
"Everyone! Close, but not *touching*," Brenda instructed, peering through the viewfinder. "Gary, less 'deer in headlights,' more 'happily employed.' Leo, wipe that cynicism off your face; you'll scare Santa. Chloe, get the banana out of Buster's mouth – he doesn't need a choking hazard for our holiday memories."
Gary tried a smile, which came out looking like he'd just remembered he left the oven on. Leo sighed, shifting his weight, and inadvertently kicked Buster's tail. Buster, startled, decided this was the perfect moment to shake his head vigorously, sending a fine mist of banana-scented slobber across the pristine white backdrop Brenda had painstakingly hung.
"Oh, for heaven's sake!" Brenda shrieked, lowering the camera. "Buster, no! Not on the backdrop!"
In the ensuing chaos, Chloe, thinking it was a game, giggled and started chasing Buster, who now had the banana firmly lodged between his teeth, convinced he'd finally achieved peak banana-ness. Leo, seeing his chance, slipped away to grab his phone.
Gary, resigned, simply wiped a blob of slobber from his cheek. "Perhaps," he suggested mildly, "we could just send a card that says, 'We survived another year. You're welcome.'"
Brenda, surveying the banana-splattered backdrop, the now-gnawed banana toy, the blurry streaks of dog and child, and Leo attempting to surreptitiously TikTok his dad's despair, took a deep breath. She raised the camera one last time, snapped a photo of the glorious, chaotic scene, and then burst into laughter.
"You know what?" she said, still chuckling. "This is us. This is perfect."
The resulting Christmas card featured a surprisingly candid shot: Gary with a resigned smile and slobber on his cheek, Leo caught mid-sneer towards the camera while texting, Chloe a blur of motion chasing a happy, slobbery Buster, and Brenda in the background, camera half-raised, tears of laughter streaming down her face. The caption read: "Happy Holidays from the Millers! May your life be as joyfully chaotic as ours."
