The Sommelier of Small Talk
Sarah arrived precisely on time, which, in the dating world, was either a sign of impeccable punctuality or an admission she had absolutely nothing better to do. Across the linen-draped table sat Julian, already scrutinizing the wine list with an intensity usually reserved for bomb disposal experts.
'Ah, Sarah! Punctuality, a virtue often overlooked in our chaotic, zeitgeist-laden existence!' he declared, rising with a flourish that nearly introduced his water glass to the table's edge. His aggressively herringbone-patterned tie seemed to vibrate with enthusiasm.
'Or, you know, traffic was surprisingly cooperative,' Sarah replied, accepting the menu.
Julian, undeterred, launched into a dissertation on the restaurant's 'curated seasonal offerings.' He then seized the wine list, tapping a manicured finger next to a rather pricey Cabernet. 'I was thinking something with a robust nose, perhaps a hint of blackberry, a whisper of old leather... something that speaks to shared passions, wouldn't you agree?'
Sarah blinked. 'I just wanted something that speaks to "it's Friday night and I'd like a drink."'
Julian chuckled, a sound like gravel rolling down a velvet hill. 'Ah, your candor! Refreshing. Much like a perfectly balanced Sauvignon Blanc.' He ordered the Cabernet anyway, along with two dishes he pronounced with an exaggerated French accent that made the waiter wince visibly.
The conversation meandered, or rather, Julian sprinted through topics ranging from the geopolitical implications of artisanal cheese to his brief, yet 'transformative,' stint as a competitive dog groomer. Sarah, meanwhile, meticulously dissected a single calamari ring, occasionally interjecting with a deadpan observation.
'I find dating to be an exquisite dance,' Julian announced, gesturing dramatically with his fork, sending a rogue olive skittering across the table. 'A tango of souls, if you will.'
Sarah deftly intercepted the olive before it reached her lap. 'More like a game of Twister, sometimes. With more rogue olives.'
By dessert, Julian was describing his spiritual journey involving a silent retreat and a particularly stubborn goat. Sarah nodded, wondering if the goat had also been subjected to his 'robust nose, whisper of old leather' critiques.
As the bill arrived, Julian beamed. 'This has been truly illuminating, Sarah. I feel we've forged a profound connection, a resonance of spirits.'
Sarah considered this. 'Well, you certainly illuminated a lot about competitive dog grooming.' She smiled sweetly. 'And I now know exactly what kind of wine *not* to order if I want it to speak to me about old leather.'
