The Bertian Whack
Arthur stared at the dripping tap, a single bead of water clinging precariously before plummeting into the sink with a sound that, to Arthur, had taken on the ominous cadence of a death knell for his sanity. He wasn't particularly good with plumbing, or really, anything involving tools beyond a spoon.
His neighbor, Brenda, materialised in the doorway, armed with a plate of unsolicited cookies and an even more unsolicited opinion. "Still at it, Arthur? It's been two days. You know, my Uncle Bert used to fix everything with a single swift whack."
Arthur, without looking up, shifted a wrench slightly, achieving nothing. "Yes, Brenda. I considered that. However, I lack the specific Bertian gene for 'swift whack' efficacy."
Brenda sighed, a sound that implied Arthur was personally responsible for all global water shortages. "Well, what about the bucket method? My aunt used to just put a bucket under it. Never bothered her."
Arthur finally looked at her, his expression as flat as a discarded pancake. "Brenda, I currently have three buckets, two saucepans, and an upturned colander collecting water. I've formed a rudimentary aqueduct system across my kitchen floor to a larger receptacle in the living room. It’s remarkably efficient for generating ambient humidity, less so for stopping the leak."
Brenda peered into the kitchen, a faint mist indeed hanging in the air. "Oh. Well, then, you're all set, aren't you? Problem solved." She placed the cookies on the dry patch of counter. "Just call it an indoor water feature."
Arthur slowly put down the wrench. "Yes, Brenda. I suppose I am. I’m thinking of introducing goldfish."
Brenda beamed. "Excellent! I have some fish food you can borrow." She turned to leave, satisfied.
Arthur watched her go, then retrieved a small, plastic toy boat from a nearby shelf and launched it into the deepest part of his kitchen's new 'feature'. He made a mental note to check if goldfish enjoyed miniature flotillas. The dripping continued, a steady, monotonous rhythm to his surprisingly serene existence.
