The Cat-astrophic Quarterly Report
Brenda, fresh out of onboarding and bursting with eager-to-please energy, was deep into her inaugural quarterly report presentation. Her voice, usually prone to an excited squeak under pressure, was commendably steady. She was detailing the "synergistic cross-departmental leverage" of a new initiative to Mr. Henderson and the entire C-suite via a very important, very silent video conference. She was owning it. The virtual background of a tastefully blurred modern office was impeccable. Her cat, Mittens, a fluffy white Persian with a penchant for dramatic entrances, was, she thought, safely napping.
She was wrong.
Just as Brenda was hitting her stride, explaining the projected ROI, a furry white torpedo launched itself onto her desk. Mittens, with the gravitas of a seasoned saboteur, began a slow, deliberate patrol across her keyboard, typing a string of "ghjkkkllllpppp..." into the chat. Brenda froze, her eyes widening, but she pressed on, hoping no one noticed the silent insurrection. Then, with a theatrical flourish, Mittens nudged her half-full coffee mug. In agonizing slow motion, the ceramic vessel tipped, arcing a dark brown trajectory directly towards her pristine work laptop. The ensuing splash was less a 'splish' and more a 'glug-WHOOSH' that perfectly obscured her camera lens with a murky cascade.
The silence on the conference call was deafening, broken only by Brenda's muffled cry of "Mittens, no!" and the wet gurgle of her laptop giving up the ghost. When her camera miraculously flickered back on for a final, blurry moment, it captured Brenda, drenched in coffee, a single strand of hair plastered to her forehead, trying desperately to dab the screen with a napkin.
Mr. Henderson, a man whose smile was rumored to have been contractually obligated, cleared his throat. "Ms. Davies," he intoned, a slight tremor in his voice that Brenda initially mistook for irritation. "While your presentation on 'synergy' was, shall we say, interrupted... I do believe your demonstration of 'agile spill response' was truly exceptional. And," he paused, a genuine, albeit small, smile gracing his lips, "I now understand the true meaning of 'unforeseen operational hazards.'"
Brenda just blinked, then managed a weak, coffee-scented chuckle. "Always prepared for multi-cat-tasking, sir."
