The Chosen One of Cubicle 7B and the Prophecy of the Discount Code
Kevin, a man whose life ambition peaked at "a comfortable ergonomic chair," was attempting to navigate the treacherous landscape of his Monday morning commute when a wild Bartholomew appeared. Bartholomew, a man whose attire suggested a recent, violent altercation with a thrift store display of medieval costumes, clutched a scroll that looked suspiciously like a laminated takeaway menu.
"Hark, Kevin of Sector Gamma-7!" Bartholomew boomed, nearly spilling Kevin's oat milk latte. "Thou art the Foretold One! The ancient prophecy speaks of a hero, chosen to wield the Gleaming Spork of Destiny and restore balance to the Customer Service Queues!"
Kevin, accustomed to prophecies mostly involving printer jams, merely blinked. "I'm sorry, did you say 'Customer Service Queues'?"
Bartholomew nodded gravely, his felt wizard hat askew. "Indeed! For Lord Veximus, the Dark Lord of Excessive Hold Music and Unnecessary Form Submission, has cast a pall of administrative inefficiency across the land! He has even revoked the sacred 2-for-1 discount on artisanal kale chips!"
Kevin felt a genuine shiver of dread. Not for the realm, but for his own budget. The kale chip discount *was* rather important.
Thus began Kevin's epic quest. He was armed with the 'Gleaming Spork' (a regular spork he'd found under his desk, slightly sticky), and tasked with infiltrating the 'Fortress of Bureaucracy' (the local Department of Motor Vehicles). His mission: retrieve the 'Sacred Form 7B-Alpha' and activate the 'Seal of Approval' (a rubber stamp found behind the counter next to a disgruntled employee named Brenda).
His climactic confrontation with Lord Veximus occurred in a fluorescent-lit office cubicle, not unlike his own. Lord Veximus, who turned out to be Gary from Accounts Payable, was hunched over a spreadsheet, muttering about "synergies" and "streamlining."
"Unhand the Sacred Form, fiend!" Bartholomew shrieked, dramatically waving his takeaway menu-scroll.
Gary looked up, adjusting his glasses. "It's a requisition form for new toner cartridges, Bartholomew. And you're late for your 9:30 AM meeting about the new expense report policy. Also, who's this?" He eyed Kevin with suspicion.
Kevin, channeling years of passive-aggressive office politics, stepped forward. "Gary, about that 2-for-1 kale chip discount. I believe Section 4, Sub-clause C of the 'Realm's Retail Redemption Protocol' clearly states..."
Gary's eyes widened. "The Retail Redemption Protocol? But that was superceded by the 'Consolidated Consumer Coupon Guidelines of 2023'!"
"Precisely," Kevin replied smoothly. "Which itself was invalidated by the 'Emergency Order Regarding Artisanal Produce Vouchers,' issued last Tuesday."
A long silence. Gary slowly sank back into his ergonomic chair. "You... you *read* the 'Emergency Order Regarding Artisanal Produce Vouchers'?"
Kevin just nodded, adjusting an imaginary tie. He hadn't, of course, but years of HR training had taught him the power of confidently asserting nonsense.
The 2-for-1 kale chip discount was reinstated. Customer service queues shortened by an average of three minutes. Lord Veximus (Gary) was demoted to overseeing the stationery cupboard. Bartholomew, declaring the prophecy fulfilled, asked Kevin if he could expense his bus fare home. Kevin sighed, pulling out his wallet. Some heroes just couldn't catch a break.
