The Existential Nap and the Polka-Dot Portal
Mildred, a professional napper whose resume boasted "Expert Level REM Cycling" and "Advanced Pillow Fluffing," was having a particularly deep snooze. Her pet goldfish, Finny, usually spent his afternoons judging her from his bowl, but today, Finny was distressed. A rogue dust bunny, clearly a renegade from the Great Dust Bunny Uprising of '07, had nudged Mildred's favorite novelty sock into a shimmering, polka-dotted vortex under the sofa. Mildred, sensing a disturbance in the napping force (likely caused by Finny's frantic fin-waving), roused herself. "Finny, old boy, what's all the… good heavens!" The sock, a vibrant yellow number with tiny embroidered space invaders, was now half-in, half-out of a miniature, swirling galaxy. Mildred, ever the pragmatist, deduced it was either a highly localised wormhole or Finny had finally managed to order that interdimensional pizza he'd been talking about. Curiosity trumping her desire for forty more winks, she plunged her hand in. The other side was... perplexing. Gravity seemed to be a casual suggestion rather than a strict rule, and a nearby purple cloud was emphatically explaining string theory through a series of interpretive jazz honks. A family of sentient teacups floated by, offering her existential crumpets. Mildred, after politely declining the crumpets (too many crumbs for a nap), realized her yellow sock was now arguing with a sentient spatula about the merits of parallel universes. "Well, that explains where all the other missing socks went," she mused, pulling her hand back, "They're forming a commune." She decided she'd tell her manager she needed a "brief sabbatical for interdimensional research." Her boss, a cat named Chairman Meow, would probably just blink slowly and ask for tuna.
