The Kale and Lentil "Surprise"
Brenda, beaming, set down a steaming, vaguely green-brown mound. "Dinner, darlings! Tonight, we're embarking on a culinary journey to the heart of wellness with my Kale and Lentil Surprise, complete with a turmeric-infused cashew cream drizzle!"
Her husband, Gary, offered a weak smile, his eyes darting from the plate to their two children, eight-year-old Leo and ten-year-old Chloe, who were performing synchronized expressions of silent horror.
"It's... earthy," Chloe ventured, poking at a rogue lentil.
"And... textured," added Leo, prodding his with a fork as if it might stage a dramatic escape.
Brenda, undeterred, launched into a passionate monologue about gut health, micronutrients, and the indigenous origins of the heirloom kale. Gary tried to look fascinated, but his gaze kept drifting to the emergency pizza menu hidden beneath his napkin.
After a polite, yet agonizing, five minutes of everyone bravely attempting a bite, Gary cleared his throat. "Honey, this is... a statement. A very bold statement. Perhaps one best made to a nutritionist, rather than a family who still thinks ketchup is a vegetable."
Chloe nodded vigorously. "Yeah, Mom. It tastes like a garden shed decided to have a very bad day."
Leo gagged dramatically.
Brenda's culinary ambition deflated like a soufflé left in a cold draft. "Oh," she said, looking at the uneaten mounds.
Suddenly, their Labrador, Buster, trotted in, tail wagging expectantly. He sniffed the air, then the plates. With a surprisingly elegant leap, he snatched a full serving from Gary's plate and scarfed it down in two gulps.
"Well, at least someone appreciates my efforts!" Brenda exclaimed, half-amused, half-defeated.
Gary caught Chloe's eye. "Anyone else hear the distant siren song of a pepperoni pizza?"
A chorus of relieved "Yes!" followed, and within minutes, the Kale and Lentil Surprise had been discreetly transferred to Buster's bowl (where he enthusiastically finished it), and the family was happily debating pineapple-on-pizza with the takeaway menu. Brenda even managed a laugh. Perhaps "situational" humor was more her forte than "situational" cuisine.
