The Persistent Orb of Omen
Bartholomew "Barty" Butterfield's life took a turn for the bizarre the day a single, slightly deflated "Happy Birthday" balloon decided to adopt him. It wasn't the festive kind of adoption; more like a sentient, rubbery stalker. It wasn't attached to anything, it simply *was* – always a foot behind his left ear, bobbing with an air of silent, judgmental superiority.
Barty tried everything. He released it into the stratosphere, only to find it patiently hovering by his cereal box the next morning. He hurled it into a raging bonfire; it merely floated back, smelling faintly of singed ambition. He even mailed it, first class, to a remote research station in Antarctica. Two days later, a cryptic email arrived: "Your balloon has successfully thawed, Mr. Butterfield. It now appears to be overseeing our penguin breeding program with unnerving efficiency."
His therapist, Dr. Finch, upped his rates. Dates fled mid-entrée, convinced Barty was part of an avant-garde performance art piece involving melancholic latex. His boss began assigning him tasks that involved 'extended solitude,' mostly janitorial.
One Tuesday, after the balloon silently nudged his perfectly balanced Jenga tower into oblivion, Barty snapped. He cornered the latex menace in his bathroom, showering it with a tirade usually reserved for telemarketers and rogue shopping carts. "WHY?! WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME, YOU AMORPHOUS BASTARD?!"
The balloon, usually silent, began to bob with an unusual intensity. Then, slowly, painstakingly, it began to drift and rotate. Its slightly faded lettering rearranged itself. Barty squinted. "I... A... M... S... A... V... I... N... G... Y... O... U."
Barty blinked. "Saving me? From what, you buoyant bane of my existence?!"
The balloon, with the solemnity of a seasoned oracle, rotated a final time, aiming its barely-popped corner directly at... the generic brand shampoo bottle on the shower caddy.
Just then, Barty noticed it. A tiny, almost imperceptible *wink* from the shampoo bottle's cartoon mascot.
A primal scream tore from Barty's throat. He dropped the bottle with a clatter. The balloon, meanwhile, gently drifted, resettling its lettering to form a new message.
"THE SOAP, BARTY. THE SOAP IS ALWAYS WATCHING."
