The Synergy Seance
The conference room, a sterile box of beige and fluorescent hum, was primed for "synergy." Janice, head of "Strategic Initiatives," beamed, clutching a laser pointer like a tiny, futuristic scepter. "Team," she began, sweeping the room, "we need to ideate on leveraging our core competencies to streamline cross-functional bandwidth for enhanced stakeholder value."
A hush fell, heavy with the weight of impending buzzwords. Then Barry, the new intern whose LinkedIn profile photo suggested he still owned a puka shell necklace, piped up. "So... we're having a seance to summon more internet, right? To help the shareholders... with their value?"
Janice paused, her laser pointer wavering. "Barry, no. 'Ideate' means to generate ideas. 'Synergy' is collaborative effort. 'Leveraging core competencies' means using our strengths."
Barry nodded, jotting furiously. "Got it. So, if our core competency is, say, making really good coffee, and we leverage that... do we, like, charge the stakeholders for it? Is that the enhanced value?"
A snort escaped Dave from Marketing. Janice shot him a withering look. "Barry, it's metaphorical. We're talking about optimizing processes."
"Ah, like when I optimized my process of finding a stapler by just bringing my own?" Barry offered proudly, producing a neon-pink stapler from his backpack. "Is that a cross-functional bandwidth stream?"
Janice's smile tightened into a grimace. "Let's pivot, shall we? Who has thoughts on disrupting the market with innovative paradigms?"
Barry's hand shot up. "If we disrupt the market, won't everyone get mad? And what's a paradigm? Is it like a really fancy parachute? Are we parachuting into the market?"
The room collectively held its breath, waiting for Janice to explode. Instead, she slowly lowered her laser pointer. "You know what, Barry? Let's take a quick five. Dave, could you… walk Barry through some of our foundational concepts?"
Dave, still struggling to stifle his laughter, choked out, "My pleasure, Janice. Barry, meet me by the water cooler. We'll discuss paradigms, and I promise, no parachutes involved. Unless, of course, that's our new core competency."
