My Date With The Poodle Whisperer
Sarah, meticulously applying a final layer of lip gloss, arrived at 'The Daily Grind' cafe with a flutter of first-date nerves. Her blind date, 'Mark,' was described as 'tall, dark hair, reading a worn copy of Moby Dick.' She spotted him immediately: a man with appropriately dark hair, a respectable height, deeply engrossed in a paperback.
'Mark?' she ventured, a hopeful smile on her face.
He looked up, a slightly startled expression giving way to a polite nod. 'Just "Moby Dick." But you can call me Barnaby.'
Sarah blinked. 'Barnaby? Oh, right, a nickname thing, I suppose. Sarah, nice to meet you.'
Barnaby launched into a passionate monologue about his recent triumph at the regional 'Poodle Pomp and Circumstance' competition. 'The judges loved the topiary top-knot! It really captured the essence of a spring daffodil.'
Sarah, trying to keep up, nodded sagely. 'Right, yes, the... essence. Very important in... dog grooming, I assume?' She figured Mark had a weird, niche hobby and was just trying to be 'unique.'
Barnaby beamed. 'Precisely! It's not just about the clippers, Sarah, it's about the artistry. The dedication. Do you know how long it takes to perfect a diamond-studded schnauzer snout?'
Just as Sarah was about to ask if 'diamond-studded' was literal, a different man, equally tall and dark-haired, approached their table. He held a copy of *Moby Dick*, not worn, but pristine.
'Excuse me,' he said, a perplexed frown on his face. 'I'm Mark. And I believe I'm supposed to be meeting a Sarah who enjoys competitive dog grooming?' He gestured to Barnaby. 'I think you've mistaken me for... well, him.'
Sarah's jaw dropped. Barnaby, momentarily diverted from his terrier topiary tale, looked between them, a slow dawning horror spreading across his face. 'Oh, dear,' he mumbled, suddenly looking very much like a deflated poodle himself. 'My date, Brenda, was supposed to be here. She's a huge fan of... well, you know.' He gestured vaguely at his competitive dog grooming paraphernalia.
Mark raised an eyebrow at Sarah. 'So, you *don't* enjoy competitive dog grooming?'
Sarah, mortified but also stifling a giggle, shook her head. 'Not unless it involves actual diamonds. And even then, it's a hard maybe.'
The *real* Mark chuckled. Barnaby, gathering his things, offered a sheepish apology. 'Perhaps Brenda is running late. Or perhaps I've traumatized another innocent soul.'
As Barnaby scurried away, presumably to find Brenda and regale her with tales of mistaken identity, Sarah and Mark finally sat down for their *actual* first date. Sarah, still slightly red-faced, grinned. 'Well, at least we know I have a high tolerance for elaborate dog metaphors.'
Mark smiled. 'And I now know you're not afraid to roll with the punches. Or, in this case, the poodles.' It might not have been the start they'd planned, but it was certainly a memorable one. And who knew, maybe someday Sarah *would* develop an appreciation for the art of the topiary top-knot. For now, she was just happy to be on the right date.
