The Algorithmic Empathy Machine
Mildred, a woman whose patience had been refined over decades of dealing with unskippable ads and self-checkout machines, found herself staring at a blue screen of death. "Fantastic," she muttered, "just what my Tuesday needed, a digital existential crisis."
She dialed tech support, bracing herself for the usual symphony of hold music and disingenuous cheer. A voice, unnervingly chipper, answered. "Thank you for calling Byte-Me Solutions, where we make your digital dreams come true! My name is Chad, how may I make your dreams a reality today?"
Mildred sighed. "Chad, my dream currently involves my computer not looking like a Smurf exploded inside it. It's a blue screen. Again."
"Ah, I see," Chad chirped, completely ignoring the Smurf analogy. "And just to clarify, ma'am, is the computer currently powered on?"
Mildred paused, a slow, dangerous smile spreading across her face. "Well, Chad, it *was* powered on when it decided to commit digital suicide. Now it's more in a state of 'enlightened contemplation of its own mortality,' as indicated by the glowing blue screen. I suppose that counts as 'on' if you consider a comatose patient 'awake' enough to appreciate their hospital gown."
Chad, unflustered, continued, "Understood. And is the power cable securely plugged into both the computer and the wall outlet?"
"You know, Chad," Mildred said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness, "I usually just let the electricity float through the air via positive vibes, but today I thought I'd experiment with a revolutionary new concept called 'plugs.' And behold, they are indeed plugged in. It’s almost as if I require power for this device to… operate."
There was a brief silence, then Chad's voice returned, noticeably less chirpy. "Right. And have you tried restarting the computer?"
Mildred let out a theatrical gasp. "Restarting? Chad, you absolute genius! Why, I never would have thought of such an innovative solution. I mean, it’s not like that’s the first thing literally *everyone* tries when anything electronic misbehaves. My deepest apologies for wasting your valuable time with my failure to grasp such cutting-edge troubleshooting techniques." She paused. "It’s been restarted. Many times. Each time with less hope and more profanity."
Chad mumbled something about checking the knowledge base. Mildred just leaned back, a victor in the subtle art of verbal sparring, even if her computer was still a very expensive paperweight.
