Bartholomew's Existential Scone
Bartholomew adjusted his spectacles, his gaze sweeping over the slightly damp interior of 'The Daily Grind,' a coffee shop whose name, he often mused, seemed to be a rather pointed commentary on life itself. Mildred, perched opposite him like a particularly vibrant robin, was currently dissecting what appeared to be a charcoal briquette masquerading as a scone.
"Isn't this just divine, Bartholomew?" Mildred chirped, holding up a shard of the pastry. "Such a delightful crunch! You can truly taste the *essence* of the oven here."
Bartholomew slowly blinked. "Indeed, Mildred. One might say it's achieved a level of crispness usually reserved for autumn leaves or ancient parchment. A remarkable feat of dehydration, truly. I imagine it's an heirloom scone, passed down through generations of bakers who held a deep, philosophical aversion to moisture."
Mildred beamed. "Exactly! It's so rustic! Not like those insipid, fluffy things everyone else makes. This has character! It stands up for itself!"
"Oh, it stands," Bartholomew agreed, watching her struggle to bite into it. "Like a small, unyielding monument to its own resilience. And the coffee," he continued, taking a sip of the lukewarm, vaguely beige liquid in his cup. "A bold choice. They've captured the exact nuance of regret. It whispers 'what if' with every sip, wouldn't you say?"
"Mmm, so complex!" Mildred hummed, finally managing to gnaw off a crumb. "It makes you think, doesn't it? Not just a drink, but an experience! A journey!"
Bartholomew leaned back, defeated. "Indeed, Mildred. A journey. Perhaps one best undertaken with a fully stocked emergency kit and a therapist on speed dial. This place truly does elevate the mundane to the… well, to the existentially challenging."
"And that's why I love it!" Mildred declared, finishing her scone with a triumphant snap. "Never a dull moment! You always find the brightest side, Bartholomew! It's truly inspiring!"
